Wilfredo had two registered businesses and approximately 13 employees. Why did none of his employees testify at trial on his behalf?

The day of my arrest was a Friday night. Between Saturday and Sunday, according to my recollection, FBI agents visited each of my employees. I remember believing that they were being pressured to provide information that could connect them to the investigation. I asked my employees to stay away from the matter because I was concerned that, as law enforcement officers, the FBI could use their authority in ways that could put my employees at risk.

Wilfredo’s businesses were generating income. Why did he not have the financial resources to retain the defense counsel he needed?

In 1995, I met Fabio, who began handling my accounting. He prepared my tax returns and handled payments to suppliers, payroll, and other accounting matters.

In 1997, I gave Fabio authorization to sign on my behalf at the bank where I managed most of my business funds.

According to my recollection, Fabio later learned through information connected to the FBI investigation that I could be facing a lengthy prison sentence and, after serving my sentence, deportation to El Salvador. I remember that he subsequently withdrew the money from the main business account.

Enrique was already arrested. Wilfredo learned through Crystal Lake PD that Enrique was transported to Cary PD due to jurisdiction. Wilfredo went to Cary PD to speak to the officer in charged.

Sergeant DeLulio allowed me into his office, and we had what I remember as a friendly conversation. I told Sergeant DeLulio about my business relationship with Enrique. I explained what I knew about Enrique’s order, the down payment, the third-party checks, the delivery of the order, the remaining balance, and my concerns about what was happening.

I also told Sergeant DeLulio that I did not understand the law and that I had no intention of breaking it. I believed I had too much to lose to knowingly participate in a crime.

I told Sergeant DeLulio that, if there was any fraudulent money involved, I believed it could be in Enrique’s vehicle, which was parked at Grand National Bank. Approximately one hour later, according to my recollection, FBI agents arrived at the Cary Police Department.
